Trujillo

The city of Trujillo is located on the northern coast of Peru. It is the capital of the department of La Libertad. It has a dry climate which reaches 32°C in the summer, 13°C in the winter, and has an annual average temperature of 20°C.

Trujillo is located proximally to two important archaeological sites: Chan Chan and the Temples of the Sun and the Moon. Chan Chan is the largest mud city of the ancient world and has been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. The Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon are the largest mud pyramid in Peru.

Additionally, Trujillo is host to Huanchaco beach, which is said to be one of its main attractions and is accessible via a 15 minute bus ride.

The center of Trujillo is filled with abundant colonial history. All the people of Trujillo are proud of their rich cuisine and would be bliss for any gastronomist. Their traditional dance is known as the Marinera and it is celebrated annually during the month of January at the International Marinera Dance Competition.

Despite being the city with the highest economic growth in Peru, there are still areas suffering from difficult living conditions and in some cases extreme poverty. People living in these conditions do not have access to high quality education or sufficient health care, resulting in malnourished and uneducated children. Since only a small percentage of the population in Trujillo possesses the health insurance or money necessary to acquire such services, doctors at health centers are struggling to give the general population the comprehensive care it deserves.

There is a significant difference in quality among national private and public educational systems. This is mainly caused by low income to underprivileged populations, resulting in a poor public education infrastructure. Furthermore, there are organizations that are home to children who have been orphaned, experienced domestic abuse, or have been neglected by the elderly.  Such organizations provide the living conditions and services necessary to promote healthy juvenile development.

As a volunteer in Trujillo AMAPERU World will have the opportunity to experience the reality of our culture, customs and affection and sympathy of the people of Trujillo.
